The PoliMi Sailing Team, a sailing team from Politecnico di Milano, has won the SuMoth Challenge 2025, the world’s most prestigious university competition in sustainable foiling sailing, for the second year in a row.
We at SCS are proud to have taken part in this endeavor as a technical partner, supporting the team with precision mechanical components and engineering know-how.
A synergy that confirms our vision: to stand alongside the excellence that is building the boating of the future.
What is the SuMoth Challenge?
The SuMoth Challenge (Sustainable Moth Challenge) is an international competition held annually during Foiling Week in Malcesine, on the waters of Lake Garda.
The goal is clear: to design and build high-performance foiling boats with minimal environmental impact, using innovative materials, sustainable processes and advanced engineering solutions.
A real challenge among the world’s most prestigious universities, evaluated on three basic pillars:
- Design: design quality, engineering vision, and consistency with sustainability criteria
- Production & Performance: technical realization of the prototype and results in speed and stability tests
- Regatta: competitiveness and control of the boat in the race
The numbers of the 2025 edition:
π Location: Fraglia Vela Malcesine, Lake Garda
π Participants: 15+ university teams | 500+ students | 7+ countries
π€ Boats competing: 11 sustainable foiling prototypes
Altea: innovation and sustainability take off
The 2025 winning prototype is called Altea: a foiling boat designed and built starting September 2024.
An evolution of the Febe boat (already a winner in 2024), Altea has been able to combine structural efficiency, hydrodynamic performance and sustainable materials, reaching 20.7 knots in performance tests.
Altea’s technical solutions include:
- π± Basalt fibers: green alternative to carbon fiber, with lower environmental impact
- π¬οΈ Vela 4T-FORTEβ’: ultra-light, glue-free and fully recyclable membrane
- βοΈ Hybrid steel-carbon foil: CNC-milled appendages for improved performance and stiffness
The results of the PoliMi Sailing Team at the SuMoth Challenge 2025
π₯ 1st place – Design
π₯ 1st place – Production & Performance
π₯ 3rd place – Fleet Regatta
π 1st place overall – Overall
Who is the PoliMi Sailing Team?
The PoliMi Sailing Team consists of male and female students from the Engineering and Design courses at Politecnico di Milano, organized into five departments:
π Marketing – Mechatronics – Shore Team – Structures – Performance.
An organization that combines academic rigor and team spirit, capable of transforming each project into a real, formative experience, from idea to putting into the water.
The role of SCS in the Altea project
SCS, together with partners Three60Β° Srl and Clarentools, supported the project by providing ultra-high-precision CNC-milled mechanical components integrated into the most critical points of the foil appendages.
A concrete technical contribution, but also a testimony to how collaboration between industry and academia can generate value, innovation and sustainability.
“When talent meets the right course-made up of passion, commitment and expertise-only great results can be born,” declares Ivan Rodegari, SCS co-owner and project manager.
SCS: innovation applied to boating
We are proud to sail alongside those who know how to push the envelope.
At SCS, we believe thatsustainable innovation is not just a trend, but the obligatory route to growth for the entire industry, from marine to automotive, from prototyping to mass production.
